Nonprofit draws Latinos into education leadership

BOSTON – Many of the boards that lead school systems and universities could benefit from more diversity, and one organization is working toward that goal.

Thirty-year-old Carlos Quintanilla dream is to inspire others to fulfill their potential, and he learned this from a program he was introduced to four years ago called Latinos For Education.

“Latinos for Education helped me learn who I truly am as a person to give back to my community,” 30-year-old Carlos Quintanilla said.

UN: Education for refugees very limited compared to hosts

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The UN refugee agency said in a new report Tuesday that access to education for refugees remains very limited compared to their counterparts in host countries and called for all youngsters forced to flee their countries to have access to quality schooling.

According to the report entitled “All Inclusive The Campaign for Refugee Education,” 42% of refugee children globally were enrolled in pre-school education in the academic year 2020-2021, 68% were in primary school, 37% in secondary school, and 6% in higher education.

In Chad, a mobile school offers nomad children hope | Education News

Chad’s nomads make up almost a tenth of the country’s population and many children in the community hardly get an education.

In a makeshift open-air classroom, dozens of children sit squeezed together on a mat watching their teacher chalk simple sums on a blackboard – a rare chance of education for their nomadic community in Chad.

According to the Denmark-based International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs, fewer than 1 percent of nomad boys and “virtually zero” nomad girls were registered for school in Chad as of 2018.

Nova Scotia ECEs stage protest outside education minister’s office, call for living wage – Halifax

Early childhood educators (ECEs) from across Nova Scotia gathered outside the education minister’s office Thursday morning, protesting what they’re calling inaction on their compensation package.

The group began their day of action at Grand Parade, then marched through downtown Halifax to Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Becky Druhan’s office on Brunswick Street.

“I’m here because we’re tired of waiting and not knowing when we’re getting raises,” says Jasmin MacFarlane, who’s been an early childhood educator for the past six years.

“We really deserve more.”

Abduction, murder of Eliza Fletcher leaves University of Memphis students shocked

The education community was left stunned by the kidnapping and murder of Eliza Fletcher, a Memphis teacher who was abducted during an early-morning jog near the University of Memphis (UofM).

Dene teacher education program gets $250K from Saskatchewan government

A teacher education program that trains instructors to deliver education in the Dene language in Saskatchewan’s northern communities got a funding boost from the provincial government.

The government is contributing up to $255,000 to the First Nations University of Canada for its Dene teacher education program at educating Saskatchewan students in their first language.

The goal of the program is to improve student participation and rates of graduation by helping teacher recruitment and retention in northern Saskatchewan.

Minister of Advanced Education Gordon Wyant said the partnership is a shared commitment to truth and reconciliation and the calls to action.
