Who Qualifies For Education Tax Breaks For College?

There are several education tax breaks to help taxpayers pay for college. These include the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC), Lifetime Learning Tax Credit (LLTC), Student Loan Interest Deduction, Education Savings Bond Program, Coverdell Education Savings Accounts and 529 College Savings Plans.

Some of these tax breaks involve tax credits and some involve an exclusion from income, often called a deduction. Each tax break has different eligibility restrictions and different definitions of eligible expenses. Some of the requirements are adjusted annually for inflation and some are not.

Strafford County commissioners tout transparency of nursing home plan

We read with great interest Rep. Len Turcotte’s guest column in Foster’s Daily Democrat. Rep. Turcotte is clearly misinformed regarding the county nursing home project. Perhaps this is because he failed to attend a nearly three-hour workshop where many of his negative comments were addressed.

The architect and cost estimator were present at the workshop and answered questions from delegates who joined us both in the room and remotely that Rep. Turcotte suggested were unanswered. This project is no different from other county projects where all aspects of the work will be subject to competitive bidding to control costs.

School board moves closer to finish line on anti-racism policy

Sept. 29—Members of the Frederick County Board of Education on Wednesday discussed their vision for the system’s policy on racism.

The current draft policy is four pages long and outlines how Frederick County Public Schools should handle racial bias on an individual and systemic level. It calls on board members to “engage in regular, candid and action-oriented discussions of race and racial inequities in FCPS”; and covers issues from hiring and training to data collection to curriculum.

The proposed title of the policy has switched back and forth between “Anti-Racism” and “Addressing and Eliminating Racism.”

Tensions run high over worksheet outside Southington Board of Education meeting

SOUTHINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) — Tensions ran high outside a board of education meeting in Southington Thursday night over a worksheet that was given out in a tenth-grade English class at Southington High School.

The handout was about race and identity and included words like “white privilege” and “transgender.” School officials looked into the matter and said while the worksheet was not properly vetted the teacher was only creating a space in the classroom for discussion.

Maternal education and household income at birth can increase a child’s chances of overweight and obesity

A mother’s level of education can be an important predictor of early childhood overweight and obesity, according to a new international study.

The paper, published in International Journal of Obesitylooks at the relation between early childhood socioeconomic status (SES)—as measured by maternal education levels and household income—and later development of childhood overweight and obesity in seven cohorts of children from high-income countries.
