Jason Clare has just put the Australian Research Council on notice. This brings (some) good news for academics

This week Education Minister Jason Clare has kicked off what could be a major reset of university research funding in Australia.

He first announced a review of the Australian Research Council (ARC) in July but released the details of how it would work on Tuesday. He also released a strongly worded “letter of expectations” about the ARC’s work for the rest of 2022.

Victor Valley Union High School District has entered into a resolution agreement to end race discrimination in the implementation of school discipline, the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights said this week.

The Office for Civil Rights determined that VVUHSD was discriminated based on race in violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by disciplining Black students more frequently and more harshly than white students. The Office for Civil Rights opened the investigation into VVUSD in 2014.

New vans allow Nanaimo Science to double up on education outreach | NanaimoNewsNOW

Nanaimo Science, a non-profit agency, is headquartered at Country Club Centre, with their mobile science vans filled with everything science brought directly to the kids.

For the past eight years, the programs have been coordinated through Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools for grades two, five, and six. They also work with teachers to coordinate special field trips, or go into classrooms to teach things like coding and computer programming, as well as provide support for home-schooled students.

Montreal English School Board launching new ‘virtual academy’ this year

As the start of the new school season is less than a week away, a Montreal school board is set to launch a new virtual school for select students who want to take their learning online.

Starting this week, the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) is opening registration for the Quebec Virtual Academy, which will be eligible to certain students who meet specific criteria set by the Ministry of Education.

The International Council of Museums redefines the word ‘museum’

For the first time in 15 years, the International Council of Museums (ICOM), a nonprofit that makes recommendations and establishes standards around the world, has updated its definition of the word “museum.” Following a years-long debate over how ideological the definition should be, the final text includes new language about museums being ethical, diverse, accessible, inclusive and sustainable.

Preps: Ava Lane wins Basalt XC invite, other area prep sports are also off and running

The Basalt High School cross country team got its season underway on Saturday with its home meet, the Longhorn Invitational at Crown Mountain Park. The highlight came in the girls race, won by BHS senior standout Ava Lane in 19 minutes, 16.4 seconds. Not competing was her senior teammate, Katelyn Maley, the two-time defending Class 3A state champion.

Montreal school board to create virtual school for vulnerable students

The Quebec government has announced that it is ending online learning for students vulnerable to COVID-19 complications, but that isn’t stopping one school board from going ahead with a virtual option.

In a statement, the Education Ministry said that since the province ended its public-health state of emergency in March, the measures taken to provide distance learning also ended with the 2021-22 school year.

“From now on, it is only through the development and implementation of a pilot project authorized by the Ministry that educational institutions can offer distance education services as part of the general education of young people,”
