Education Notebook: Parkview Health celebrates renovated student lab at Randallia site | Schools

Renovations to a student laboratory have made it possible for Parkview Health to train more people for a lesser-known career field that has a significant effect on patient care, a news release said.

The classrooms and offices at the lower level of Parkview Hospital Randallia were also remodeled, allowing the Parkview Medical Laboratory Science program to admit up to 20 students a year, the release said. It noted the program previously could accept nine pupils annually.

Its focus is to prepare students to pass their exams for national certification, which is required by most employers, the release said.

Team teaching is breaking the mold of high school education

MESA, Ariz. — There are plenty of negative trends showing up in education across the country. Student test scores are down and teachers are leaving the profession in droves. But, there is positive change happening too. There is a new kind of classroom that’s hoping to make the school more engaging for teachers and students.

“I can only describe it as magical,” said Jenny Denton, who teaches world history at Mountain View High School in Mesa, Arizona. “We work together really well.”

The Nevada Board of Regents voted Friday to adopt a new definition for anti-Semitism to use in anti-bias and anti-discrimination training at all of its higher education institutions.

As part of an update to its policies that will require Nevada’s colleges and universities to establish diversity training every two years, the board also adopted a new definition for anti-Semitism that is used by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, an organization that works to educate communities about the Holocaust.

Jupiter High School gets extra mental health support after student emergency

Many parents and students continue to have questions about a student medical emergency that prompted a lockdown and tense day at Jupiter Community High School on Thursday.

While we don’t know the exact circumstances surrounding the medical incident because of privacy laws, we do know it had a big impact on the school community.

Every Palm Beach County public school has a counselor and behavioral health specialist on campus. But something like Thursday’s emergency brings out more support with therapy dogs, additional counselors, and really a whole team.

Ohio Senate OKs shift in oversight of education to governor

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The latest proposal to give Ohio’s governor more power overseeing K-12 education cleared the Republican-led state Senate on Wednesday despite objections that lawmakers are rushing legislation to significantly change decision-making about academic standards, model curricula and school district ratings, among other things.
